Gabriel came to the United States from Venezuela in search of safety and a better future for his family. He found work with a construction company in Texas, but instead of opportunity, he was met with exploitation. His employer took his immigration and personal documents, preventing him from renewing his visa, effectively making him undocumented. Because of his lack of immigration status, his employer took advantage of him and used that as leverage to exploit Gabriel, promising a home for his family if he kept working long, grueling hours under the blistering Texas sun.
He wasn’t alone. Other workers faced the same mistreatment and exploitation. Then, one day, the police raided the worksite and detained all the workers.
When questioned, Gabriel chose to tell the truth. He shared his story with the agents, who quickly recognized the signs of labor trafficking. They referred Gabriel to Mosaic, where he met with an attorney to help apply for immigration relief and protect his rights as a trafficking victim.
His employer was ultimately charged and convicted of human trafficking. Gabriel played a key role in the criminal case, bravely participating in the process and sharing his story.
After the trial, Gabriel’s attorney filed a petition for remission, a legal process allowing victims to seek compensation from the seized assets of the convicted trafficker. Gabriel hoped that if the petition was approved, he might finally be able to achieve what his employer had falsely promised: a safe and stable home for his family.
Finally, after years of uncertainty, Gabriel’s request for was granted. The compensation he received was life-changing, enough to buy a home.
For the first time in a long time, Gabriel could finally give his family the safety and stability they had risked everything to find.
